My mixtape memoir for English Composition!! Crafted with utmost care, it reveals some of who I am and am proud to be.
Music is My Hot, Hot Se…Well, You Know
Since I could remember, music has been my escape from anything and everything in the world. To this day I cannot do anything without music playing. Music is my imaginary friend, my favorite mistress, and my beach house; without it I could not function! My childhood was simple: no cable, no family vacations, and no trips to the mall. One thing was in abundance and that was music.
It all started at the age of 5 with a simple TV Theme:
They’ve got
A power and a force that you’ve never seen before
They’ve got
The ability to morph and to even up the score – Go, Go Power Rangers by Ron Wasserman
To this day, I remain a faithful fan of the Power Rangers and their main theme helped to solidify what I aspire to do in the entertainment industry. I’m here to rattle this ghost town. Not many people can recite the full 5-minute song, and I am proud to say that I can. The show shaped what I would listen to in the coming years and has never stopped influencing my life.
One of the things I like to do is build out my taste by buying soundtracks and then picking bands or singers to follow. One group stuck out in particular as the diamond on my journey to great music. A small Belgian band named Hooverphonic changed once more the route of my taste and helped guide me through one of the hardest moments in my travel to adulthood - Break-ups:
Did you ever think of me
As your best friend?
Did I ever think of you?
I’m not complaining – Eden by Hooverphonic
Concentrating on the beauty of the strings, the compliment of the drums, and the lyrics helped me to overcome the pain of heartbreak I never knew.
You can never have too many break-up songs in your music library. Damien Rice’s I Remember is what I consider to be the most powerful and emotional song that reproduces the true reflections of how love feels. It starts off with Lisa Hannigan singing praises for her love with a sweet ballad playing behind her, then, halfway through the song, it changes rhythm and turns into this fast paced and violent song with Damien Rice telling his love to reconsider his love for her. The song itself goes from sweet and bright to violent bursts coming in and out until it fades away much like the cycle of a relationship:
And I wanna hear what you have to say about me
Hear if you’re gonna live without me
Dance music has also played an important part of my life. It let’s me cut loose and enjoy myself without inhibitions. One song from a Latin singer, Fey, who tried crossing over to an American audience but was unsuccessful captivated me like nothing has before. The ethereal rhythms and low range beats were thrown at me like a bag of bricks! The lyrics, however, changed how I thought about myself:
I see what’s waiting for me on the other side
It’s time to follow all the passion in my heart
I’m standing on the sun with nothing else to hide
I’m ready finally I can see the other side – The Other Side by Fey
I began to feel liberated the more I listened to this song; it influenced my decision to come out to my friends and family.
Score has become one of my absolute favorite genres to include in my library. The final song I want to tell you about is one that has no lyrics, but is specifically tailored with none to be synchronized with the main title of a movie. The music of this up and coming composer, Alexandre Desplat, has been a refreshing foray into emotion. He stirs up great sentiment with what he composes and comes from a school of classical training. His score to the last epics of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2, have hit the fans quite nicely and the main theme to the second film in the story. The main title theme, Lily’s Theme, flows in quietly and sorrowfully and gives us a sense for the impending danger and sadness the main characters will be facing once the story is resumed from the first part. Once the title enters the screen, the symphony erupts in this beautifully dejected piece that reminds us of where the story has left off and could go.
Music has played a vital role in shaping who I am, what I like, my entire system of reasoning, and where I want to go in life. I take pride in the fact that my creativity can be attributed to what I have at home in CDs and on my iTunes Library. I take solace in the fact that music can be the friend I need when other aren’t around, the perfect lover and escape when I have times of hardship. I can only hope that others feel the same way I do about their musical experiences. Without music, the world would not be able feel properly.

“Tron: Legacy is quite a feat going beyond the Jerry Goldsmith style of Synth-Orchestral Scoring. Hopefully, the Tron: Uprising score stays under this category!”
